Known as the “Venice of the North”, Amsterdam is not only the biggest city of the Netherlands and an important trading centre, but also a popular touristic destination in Europe. Which museums or galleries are really worth seeing during a short stay in that city full of bikes?
Rijksmuseum: not only the paintings
Those who like paintings, sculptures and beautiful handmade items should definitely find some time for a visit in that museum. Its history reaches two hundred years back. The museum’s current building became its location at the end of 19th century. Here the masterpieces of Rembrandt, Vermeer and van der Helst or Steen can be seen. The collection of Asian art is also presented here.
Something more for art lovers
When someone can spend a lot of time for admiring pieces of arts, he should definitely visit Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. In its modern buildings, the biggest collection of Van Gogh’s paintings is available to see. Here the famous “Sunflowers” can be admired. Every year more than a million people visit that place. What is interesting, young people under 18 have free admission there.
A rest among plants
Those who are tired of walking between the buildings and visiting crowded museums can visit Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam. That garden was established in 17th century and it is one of the oldest institutions like this in the world. Now 5 thousand plants can be seen here. In April, it is possible to see the exhibition of tulips. Children will not be bored, because at the entrance they can get a map of “Superplants” – the plants that keep some record in floral world. They will have great fun when searching for them with a map.
NEMO Science Museum
That place is an obligatory point for all science geeks – no matter, how old they are. For kids, it can be a wonderful experience. There are several theme exhibitions – from those connected with space, through some chemical experiments to issues concerning renewable energy. In NEMO, children learn by experimenting – it is the place where the exhibits can be touched. The building consists of five floors. It is quite big, so the visit here can take several hours or more. But for sure this time will not be wasted – especially for the family with kids.
People who like sightseeing by visiting various museums will not be disappointed. In Amsterdam, they are really impressive. It is good to have enough time to see the most interesting exhibitions and also the city itself. Maybe a week in that capital will be enough?
